 It was amazing to see India at #tokyo2020!


Below are some details about our athletes.


1. Shooting

Apurvi Chandela

She holds the world record at the ISSF World Cup in New Delhi in 2019. Her uncle built her a 10m rifle shooting range in her backyard.


Saurabh Chaudhary-World no.2

At just 17, he won two golds at the Asian Games, the Youth Olympics & the ISSF Junior World Cup. In 2020, he was listed in Forbes 30 Under 30 list.


Abhishek Verma-World no 1

A B.Tech graduate, Abhishek Verma was studying law when he found out about shooting in 2015 and intends to practice law soon.


Elavenil Valarivan- world no 1

She did not have an Olympic quota initially. Anjum Moudgil won a quota & NRAI (National Rifle Association Of India) decided to award the place to Elavenil.


2. Badminton

Sai B Praneet

He was inducted in the 1st batch of Gopichand Academy & is only the 4th Indian to win a Superseries title.


PV Sindhu

She was a part of the 2nd longest women's singles match ever in the history of badminton vs Japan's Nozomi Okuhara 2017 World Championships final. It went on for 110 minutes!

The match also featured a 73-shot long rally which Sindhu won.


Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty

Both of them did not want to play together .Chirag could not adjust to the "go for the kill" instincts of Satwiksairaj & Satwiksairaj felt that the language difference was a barrier.

They became the first Indian men’s doubles to win a Super 500 title and are currently ranked 10 in the world.


3. Archery

Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jadhav

Everyone expected Deepika to be paired with real life couple Atanu after they won a World Cup mixed team gold in Paris. Atanu failed to top the men's ranking round among Indians & Pravin Jadhav, the youngest member of the team took the spot.

This is the first time they will be paired together


4. Weightlifting

Mirabai Chanu

The lone weightlifter for India, Mirabai changed her weight category to 49kg from her original 48 kg after the international federation introduced new categories.


5. Boxing

Vikas Krishan Yadav

In 2021, he became the second Indian boxer after Vijender Singh to qualify for the Olympics for the third time. 


6. Judo

Sushila Devi

She will be the Sole Indian Judoka at the Tokyo Olympics & is set to make her debut


7. Table tennis

Achanta Sharath Kamal

He became the first Indian to break into the Top 50 in 2010.

Sathiyan Gnanasekaran

He became the first Indian paddler to enter the World Top 25 ITTF rankings, claiming the 24th rank.


Manika Batra

She is the first Indian woman table tennis player to win an individual gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

 

Sutirtha Mukherjee

She beat compatriot Manika Batra in the Asian Olympic Qualifiers Tournament to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.


8. Tennis:

Sumit Nagal

In 2019, Nagal qualified for the US Open faced Rodger Federer in the 1st round. He lost the match, but did take the first set against him.

He is the highest-ranked Indian in the singles event.
